Family

Charlemagne

Charles the Great was the King of Francia, the King of Italy, and the Holy Roman Emperor.  Less importantly, he was my 36th-great-grandfather.  Charlemagne united most of Western Europe during the Middle Ages.

Samuel Palmer

Samuel Palmer was a prominent British landscape artist.  He was my 2nd-great-grandfather's double first cousin.  The British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art commemorated his 200th anniversary.

Kevin Rudd

Another of my notable relatives is Kevin Rudd, who was the 26th Prime Minister of Australia.  One of his granduncles married one of my grandaunts.  The Rudd government introduced a national school curriculum.

Gerry Moriarty

A granduncle of mine was Brigadier Gerald Moriarty (MC, CBE, MVO).  Gerry won a Military Cross for his critical improvisation during WW1.  He later served as Queensland Railways Commissioner for a decade.

Henry Chichele

Henry Chichele was the Archbishop of Canterbury for nearly thirty years in the first half of the 15th century.  He was a brother of my 16th-great-grandfather's (William Chichele), who was the Sheriff of London.

Samantha Stosur

I'm also related to Sam Stosur, the Australian tennis player.  She is my third cousin, once removed.  We were thrilled when Sam won the US Open in 2011, defeating Serena Williams in straight sets!

Michael Faraday

Michael Faraday is regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time.  Einstein put him in the company of Galileo, Newton and Maxwell!  Michael was an uncle of my 2nd-great-grandfather's sister-in-law.

Joseph Lyons

I'm also related to Joseph Lyons, who was the 10th Prime Minister of Australia.  He was my uncle-in-law's second cousin twice removed.  As PM and treasurer, he guided his country through the Great Depression.

Softy

Softy (1996-2015) was the best pet I ever could have hoped for.  His personality matched his magnificent (Norwegian Forest cat) appearance.  After leading a full and healthy life, Softy sadly succumbed to lymphoma.
